Fuel filters are an inline device that helps capture any impurities in its filtering screen or material as fuel flows from the fuel tank to the engine. It can be located in different places, depending on your vehicle. In newer vehicles, the filter may be located in the fuel tank, as part of an integrated fuel pump assembly. It may only be replaced when the fuel pump needs to be replaced. Another location is on the frame outside the fuel tank. Others may even have a pair: one inside the fuel tank and another outside the fuel tank, somewhere along the fuel lines.
The fuel filter acts as a permeable barrier that clears impurities, deposits, pollutants, and rust from the fuel before it enters the vehicle's engine. The fuel filter can be a filter cartridge internally loaded with paper filtering material. Most technicians will replace the fuel filter during regular scheduled maintenance intervals. But there is a question: what if your car hasn't been serviced for a while. How do you know when it's time to replace it?
Key indicators to note about fuel filters
Your vehicle is difficult to start
This may be a result of a clogged fuel filter. It may eventually start, but if it takes a while, it indicates that fuel cannot pass through the filter and enter the engine.
Your car, truck, or SUV may not start at all
But you may not be able to attribute it all to the fuel filter. There may be other reasons, including fuel pump failure.
Excessive vibration at idle
Most vehicles have slight vibrations, but if you're waiting for a red light to change or you find yourself crawling in stop-and-go rush hour traffic and feel your SUV roughing it or stalling, it likely indicates clogged fuel lines, likely the fuel filter.
Rough, slow cruising
Experts say that steady highway cruising followed by low-speed driving is usually a sign of a clogged fuel filter. Highway speeds require higher fuel flow, which may mask the problem. Slower speeds use less. But clogged filters will show up at this lower speed.
Car stalls while driving
Ignoring the symptoms listed above may cause your vehicle to stall while driving, especially when you need it the most. This negligence can lead to harm to your vehicle and yourself.
